Simão Mota Carneiro’s practice is rooted in painting as an intuitive and continuous process of exploration. For Carneiro, painting operates as a device for slowing down the image, questioning both the visible and the realm of the invisible. His works emerge through a process of pictorial exercise and exploration, investigating the possibilities of painting as both an image and an object that activates visual and sensory perception. Oscillating between figuration and abstraction, Carneiro’s practice is driven by the pursuit of creating images that question the act of looking and how images are formed, perceived, and imagined.
